I had some other Valentine’s Day crafts in mind to do for you, but when I got sick with Covid, that all kinda went by the wayside. But I do have one more cute Valentine card idea for you that’s super quick and easy. You can make it as a decoration or a card. You’ll need a piece of construction paper (I used pink), some glue, pretty string or yarn, a pencil, markers or crayons and scissors. Begin by drawing a heart on your piece of construction paper. I used a heart shaped cookie cutter to trace around for my heart. (My apologies for the poor quality of pictures. I was coming down sick when I made this and didn’t feel up to moving around to find better lighting.)
Write your message on your card.
Draw a line of glue on the heart shape.
Lay a piece of the pretty string or yarn all around on the line of glue.
Cut the string or yarn to the right length to finish the heart shape.
That’s all there is to it! 🙂 Your card or decoration is finished! Allow the glue time to dry and then share your craft with that special someone.
This is a fun card to open because there is a little heart inside that will twirl around when the card is opened. Sound fun? Let’s get started! You will need a piece of construction paper approximately 5 inches by 9 inches. (The size can vary.) Some scissors, glue, 2 small hearts cut from another color of construction paper, markers and some thread.
Begin by folding the piece of paper in half.
Using your scissors, cut a half of a heart shape on the fold.
Fold one side of the paper end up past the heart shaped cut.
Do the same with the second side.
When you open the card up, it should look like this from the end view.
And it should look like this from the front.
Now turn the card over so the back side is facing up. The fold in the middle of the heart cut out should be going “down” with the folds on each side going “up”. Cut a piece of thread that is just long enough to cross the heart cut-out and have a little room on each side of the top and bottom of the heart.
Make sure your little hearts are small enough to fit in the heart cut-out with room all around it so it will be able to spin.
It’s time to make the twirling heart part. Put some glue on 1 small heart, making sure there is glue down the center of the heart.
Lay your piece of thread on the heart with the glue and make sure it is in the center of the heart.
Lay the second heart on top and press the 2 hearts together so they stick together completely.
Decorate the small heart in any way you like. I wrote a word on each side.
Double check that the fold in the center of your card is down or the back side of the card is facing up.
Run a line of glue right in the center of the fold crease.
Place your small heart in the center of the heart cut-out with the strings laying on the lines of glue on each side.
Give the glue time to dry before moving on. The next step is to decorate your card by writing or drawing whatever you like on your card. The right side panel will be the front of your card when it is folded up.
This is what my card looks like when its folded.
Before closing your card, gently turn the small heart several times like you are winding it up. Carefully close the card, checking to make sure the small heart is laying flat.
When the card is opened, the small heart inside will spin! 🙂 You might want to hold the card closed with a paper clip or place it inside an envelope.
I hope you will enjoy making this Twirling Heart card! 🙂
Are you still looking for Valentine cards that are simple enough for your kids to make? Here’s another suggestion for you! We’ll call this one the Soda Pop Valentine card. 😉 You’ll need a piece of paper, glue, a black marker, colored pencils or crayons, a pencil, scissors, a cut out paper heart and a straw.
I used half a sheet of pink construction paper for my card. I folded it in half to make a nice size for a card. On the front, using a pencil, draw a soda pop bottle.
With a thin line marker or black pen, trace over the bottle you just drew so that it stands out more plainly.
Color in the bottom 2/3 of the bottle whatever color you’d like your pop (soda) to be. I used brown for Root Beer. I wrote the words Root Beer on my bottle but you can write whatever kind of pop you like to drink and color it the same color as the drink you chose.
(Sorry I’m not sure why this picture looks purple!) Now imagine that the straw you have is inside this bottle of pop. (soda) Cut your straw to fit the bottle. Have the bottom of the straw just touching the top of the pop (soda) in your bottle. The top of the straw should stick out above the bottle opening.
Add a line of glue down the length of the straw and hold it in place on your card for just a little bit till the glue can start to set up.
If you have a permanent black marker, you can draw the rim of the bottle on your straw too so it looks more like it is inside the bottle.
Now with a pen or marker write the words, “I “soda” love you!” (I sorta love you!)
Next, you should write on the cut out heart these words…”I love you so much I think my heart might “pop”! 😉
Then glue the heart to the inside right hand side of your card.
If you like, you can add some little lines around the outside of the heart to help make the heart look like it’s ready to pop!
And there you are! All finished! Great job! Who will you share your Valentine card with? Remember to sign your name so the person will know you are the one that made this great card for them. 🙂
Are you ready for another fun Valentine’s Day project? Let’s make a really pretty 3-D heart!
You will need some construction paper, red tissue paper (or the color of your choice), scissors, glue, a piece of string and a pencil with an eraser.
You will need to cut approximately 75 little squares of the red tissue paper. I cut mine about 1 1/2″ square. They don’t need to be perfect because the paper will be “scrunched up”. Any smaller than that could be difficult to work with. If you have a cutting mat and a rotary cutter, this part will go much quicker, but scissors work fine. 🙂
Take HALF of a sheet of construction paper and fold it in half.
Drawing on the folded edge, draw half of a heart shape.
Sorry, that’s rather hard to see. Cut out the half -heart shape and you will have a whole heart when you unfold it.
Set aside but save the piece that looks like a heart stencil for a project we will do another day. 🙂
Your finished heart can be added to a card, have a magnet attached to the back or be made to hang up like an ornament. If you would like your heart to hang as an ornament, now is the time to add a hole at the top. Go ahead and put your string through the hole because it will be harder to do later. (I found that out the hard way!)
You are now ready to start using the tissue paper squares. Take 1 square and your pencil with an eraser.
Place the pencil eraser in the middle of the square of tissue paper.
Wrap the tissue paper down around the pencil end.
Apply a very small amount of glue to the tissue paper at the end of the pencil eraser.
While holding the tissue paper onto the pencil end, place the tissue paper onto the heart you cut out. Start out close to the outside edge of the heart.
Hold in place for a few seconds, then carefully pull the pencil out leaving the tissue paper on the heart. Continue adding more pieces of tissue paper in the same way.
Keep adding…you’ve got the hang of it now!
The closer together you put the tissue paper pieces, the fuller your heart will look. Try to get the pieces right up against each other where they attach to the heart. If you like, you can just make an outline of the heart with the tissue paper.
I like it better when the entire heart is filled up. It will take a little more time but it will be worth the effort.
You did it! Isn’t that a pretty ornament to decorate your house for Valentine’s Day? I think it would be really pretty to use more than one color of tissue paper. If you used red, white and pink, wouldn’t that look nice? I hope you’ve enjoyed this Valentine activity! I’d love to see your hearts, if you care to share them!
Have you heard about the people that are displaying hearts in their windows as a show of love and support for each other during this pandemic? It’s a nice way for kids when going for a drive in the car or a walk with their parents to have something to look for. I heard about it on Facebook and there is a group you can join to learn more about it. The group is called Heart Hunters. https://www.facebook.com/groups/326431341651785/about/
It seems like a fun project to get involved in, so I gathered up some construction paper, heart shaped cookie cutters, a pencil, scissors and tape and got to work!
I used several different colors of paper to make my display bright and colorful. I made 2 sizes of hearts by tracing around the heart shaped cookie cutters and then cut each one out with my scissors.
I put my design in a window facing the road. I had trouble getting a clear picture because of the sunshine and the overhang on our roof. But now its going to rain so I’ll have to go with this picture.
I kept my design pretty simple but there are some AMAZING and complicated displays on the Heart Hunters Facebook page so be sure to go join and check it out. You can also add a photo of your heart display too. 🙂 Have fun making hearts!! We’re #InThisTogether!
Happy Valentine’s Day!! 🙂 Today I want to share a cute little craft kit that I found at Walmart that is a perfect project for Valentine’s Day. It’s Crayola’s String of Hearts kit using their Model Magic. It cost around $5.00.
Here’s what you’ll find inside the box: 1 pouch of red model magic, 1 pouch of white model magic, directions, 1 marker, 1 tube of glitter glue, 1 string, 1 tool for poking holes and 1 heart shaped cutter.
Remove 1 chunk of model magic from the pouch and roll it out to about 1/8″ thick. You can use a rolling pin, the side of a glass or just your hands. Use the heart shaped cutter to cut out as many hearts as you can. I found through trial and error that it’s best to leave a little bit of room between the hearts. It makes it easier when trying to pick them up. (I cut the red batch a little too close together and they tended to stick back together when I tried to lift them.)
I found it helpful to use a small spatula to slide under the hearts to help release them from my cutting board.
Using the little tool for poking holes, poke 2 holes in each heart. Don’t be afraid to make them too big as they seem to close up some as the hearts dry. The holes are where the string will go through them.
You can also make tiny marks on the edge of a heart using the tip of the heart shaped cutter.
As you cut out the hearts, you will have leftover scraps. Save them for now. Flatten and cut hearts out of the other color of model magic. Again, save your scraps.
You can use your leftover scraps to simply squish them back together and re-roll them to cut more hearts out. But if you take a bit of each color and squish them together just a little, you can cut out hearts that look like this:
I just LOVE these! If you mix some red and white together, but squish them together for a longer amount of time, you can make pink hearts. 🙂
If you use a little less red and a little more white, the pink will come out an even lighter color. Now you need to allow your hearts to sit out over night to dry. I kinda helped mine along a bit by heating my oven to its lowest setting, turning the oven off and letting the tray of hearts sit in the oven for an hour. Some of my hearts might have been rolled out a bit too thin, but I made 55 hearts with this kit!
After your hearts have dried, you can use the included marker and tube of glitter glue for decorating your hearts. Allow the glitter glue time to dry before proceeding.
Now you can string some of your hearts together to make a decoration to hang up. Put the string into the right hole from the right side, cross over the back of the heart and bring the string up through the heart going back to front. Continue in the same way to string as many hearts together as you would like. If your holes seem to be too small, gently use the poking tool to open them up more.
Here’s a closer view so you can see how to string the hearts together.
Do you have leftover hearts? You can glue them onto paper to make a picture or even a card for Valentine’s Day.
Hope your Valentine’s Day is special! Thanks for reading my blog! 🙂
Valentine’s Day is almost here! How about making some heart-shaped crayons for a fun Valentine’s project? Old broken crayon bits or even a brand new set of crayons will both work for this fun craft. You’ll need a mold to put the crayons in and it must be oven proof. I found this silicone heart shaped mold at Walmart for less than $2 and it worked great! This project can be done using a muffin pan but the silicone type is great for getting the new crayons out as the silicone is flexible.
Place your mold or muffin tin on a cookie sheet covered with a piece of foil or parchment paper.
Start by removing all the paper from your crayons or crayon pieces. If the children doing this project are fairly young, you might want to remove the paper before getting them involved as it can be a bit tedious getting it all off. Break the crayons into small pieces. Depending on the size of your mold, you might find it helpful to use a sharp knife to cut the crayons into very small pieces.
Fill your mold sections with the small pieces of crayons. You can keep them as one color or mix and match as you please. The crayon pieces will melt so its good to let some pieces of the crayons stick up just a bit higher than the top of the mold section. They will settle down in as they melt together.
Set your oven on a low temperature setting. I used 170 degrees F because that is as low as my oven will go. Place the cookie sheet with the mold on it into the oven and leave it there for 20-25 minutes. Each oven is a little different so keep a close eye on how the crayons are doing and adjust the time accordingly. The outside heart sections melted quicker than the middle ones did.
After all the crayon pieces have melted, remove the cookie sheet from the oven and let the mold cool. The shapes will set up and harden as the melted crayons cool. Once everything is cool to the touch, remove the newly shaped crayons from the mold.
I love how these turned out! Its a great project for Valentine’s Day or any day of the year! 🙂
Wow, I can hardly believe that Valentine’s Day is a week from today!! Are you looking for a fun craft for the kids to do for Valentine’s Day? Here’s a cute little guy that I used to make when I was a little whippersnapper. It doesn’t take much to make it…red or pink paper, white paper, scissors, glue or tape, a marker and, if you have them, heart shaped cookie cutters. If you don’t have the cookie cutters, no problem! You can draw hearts to cut out.
First thing to do is to make 1 large heart and 4 small hearts out of the red or pink paper. I traced around cookie cutters.
I used a piece of printer paper for my white paper. Make 4 strips of paper approximately 1/2″ wide by the width of the paper. (8 1/2″)
You should have 1 large heart, 4 small hearts and 4 strips of white paper.
Draw a face on the large heart with a marker or crayon or pen. Make it as silly or as sweet looking as you like.
Take one strip of paper and beginning at one end, fold it back and forth in accordion style. Then repeat that with each of the other 3 strips.
Glue 1 small heart to one end of each of the 4 strips.
The 4 accordion strips with hearts become this little guy’s arms and legs. Glue them in place like in the following photograph and you’re finished!
You can add a Valentine wish to the back of the large heart and use it for a Valentine’s card to give to your favorite Valentine! Have fun! 🙂
