Making Yarn Pumpkins For Fall

Do you enjoy decorating your home for Fall or Halloween? Both are appropriate for orange pumpkins, so today let’s look at how to make some easy ones! 🙂 This is a great craft project for the kids too.

You will need some orange yarn, a piece of a green pipe cleaner and scissors.

Begin your pumpkin by wrapping the yarn around your hand. Depending on the size of your hand and the size of pumpkin you want to make, how many times you will need to wrap the yarn around your hand or fingers. You can also use a piece of cardboard instead of your hand. Hands or fingers are just…well, handy! 😉

For an adult size hand using all 4 fingers, you will want to wrap the yarn around at least 100-120 times.

Carefully slide the yarn off your hand but keep all the pieces held close together. Cut a piece of yarn from the yarn ball approximately 5-6 inches long.

Lay the extra piece of cut yarn on the table and lay the wrapped yarn on top of it, keeping the cut piece in the center of the wrapped ball.

Tie a tight knot with the cut piece of yarn in the center of the wrapped yarn. Tie it 2 or 3 times so it won’t come undone. And make sure to keep the knot tight while tying it the second time. It’s easy for it to slip looser and then you will lose the shape of your pumpkin.

Now take the small piece of green pipe cleaner and tie another knot around the middle of it on top of the first knot.

You can also just slip the pipe cleaner under the first knot you tied, but be careful as it can snag the yarn.

Twist the 2 ends of the pipe cleaner together and shape it like the pumpkin’s stem. Trim the extra length of yarn from tying the knots.

That’s all there is to it! 🙂 You can fluff your pumpkin with your fingers to make it look just right to you. Make as many pumpkins as you like and use them to decorate your house for the season.

I hope you will enjoy making yarn pumpkins! 🙂

I’m back and I’m sharing Dessert Tacos today!

Wow, sorry I haven’t posted in ages but life has been happening. We had some lovely company come to stay for a few days and then I got sick with the flu. (Yes, while our company was here. Ugh!) So I’ve been coughing my head off and feeling blah for 2 weeks now. Finally on the mend, though the cough wants to hang on. But I hope to be back to sharing some fun things for you to try! 🙂

Today’s post is about Dessert Tacos! Someone mentioned something the other day and my brain took off and I had to try my idea out. While not all of my ideas are winners, we really liked our Dessert Taco experiment! It’s not an exact recipe so feel free to tweak this to fit your family. I am drooling again just looking at the picture! 😉

You will need some crunchy taco shells…I used these mini shells.

You’ll also need some cooking type apples, butter, white sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon. Some whipped cream makes a great finishing touch too! A word of caution: these are a bit messy to eat, but oh, so delicious! 😉 Begin by placing your taco shells on a cookie sheet and set your oven to preheat to the temperature printed on the taco shell box.

While the oven is preheating, place some butter in the bottom of a large skillet. I used about 4 tablespoons.

Peel and slice 4 large cooking type apples.

Melt the butter in the skillet over a medium heat.

Add the sliced apples and cook on the medium heat.

As the apples start to soften, add some brown sugar and cinnamon. I used 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.

Stir together and continue cooking until the apples are as soft as you like them.

After your apples are cooked, pour them into a bowl and cover to keep them warm until the shells are ready.

When your oven has preheated, pop the taco shells in for the suggested time on the taco shells box. The mini shells only need 3-4 minutes. If you are using larger shells, they will take a little longer to bake. While the shells are baking, mix together some white sugar and cinnamon. The suggested ratio is 1 part of cinnamon to 4 parts of white sugar. I used 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 4 tablespoons of white sugar.

When the taco shells are heated, remove them from the oven and right away use a chunk of butter to rub over one side of each shell.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture lightly over the buttered shells.

Turn the shells over and do the same to the other side.

Fill each taco shell with the warm apples. Make sure you have a plate handy to put them on once they are filled.

Add some whipped cream on top of the apples and these Dessert Tacos are ready to be eaten!

We were able to fill 6 mini taco shells and still have some apples leftover. We also had leftover cinnamon sugar and I saved it to use in another recipe later. Or maybe to make some more dessert tacos! 🙂 I hope your family will enjoy these as much as we did!

Christmas Stuff in September??

Ok, so yesterday I made the comment about sharing a Halloween craft when it was still September…but today I did some shopping and I was surprised (well, maybe shocked) to see how much Christmas stuff is in the stores already! Is it just me or do the Christmas decorations show up earlier every year? I like Christmas too, but already?? Here’s what greeted me when I walked into Lowes today…

Aaaaand a bunch of Christmas trees.

Look at what I saw when I went into Hobby Lobby…

You gotta check out these ADORABLE gnomes! So cute! (Ok, it did make me smile just looking at them. And yes, that sign says 50% off.)

Before you get the wrong idea, I am NOT Scrooge! I love buying gifts for our family and I love the Christmas season. But my question to you is “Is the Christmas season starting too early?” I don’t usually wait till the last minute to do my shopping. But seeing all the items in the stores now makes me feel like I’m a real slow poke! LOL So, tell me what you think? Are you buying Christmas decor and/or gifts already? Or is it too soon for you? Thanks! I look forward to seeing your responses! 🙂

Cheap Halloween Craft From Walmart

Hello, again and Happy Monday! Today I want to share an inexpensive Halloween craft with you that I found at Walmart. (I know, it’s still September, but the stores are FULL of Halloween stuff!) This package comes with 6 sets of a foam craft for only $1.98! When 6 kids can do a craft for $2, I think that’s a bargain!

Here’s what comes inside the package…

And these are the 6 Halloween characters you can make.

I made the Jack O’Lantern. The foam pieces are partially cut and they have adhesive on the back of them. I found it a bit difficult to punch the pieces completely out because the paper backing isn’t cut through all the way. But never fear! There is a simple way around that problem!

Use a piece of paper for the kids to stick the pieces on and just pull the foam pieces off the backing like you would do with a regular sticker. Don’t worry about punching each piece out because it isn’t necessary.

Use a different color of paper than the color the largest part of the character is so it will show up nicely.

Continue applying the stickers to make your character. The wiggly eyes do not have the adhesive backing so you will need some glue to apply those.

And the Jack O’Lantern is complete! 🙂 The tiny holes on the word “Boo” were a little tricky to get the extra pieces punched out, but using a toothpick helped.

You could use the picture as it is or turn it into a Halloween card. Have fun creating your 6 Halloween characters! 🙂

Fun With a Little Lego

If you are looking for something small to brighten your kid’s day, how about a little package of Lego? Have you seen the small packages of the minifigures Lego? You may find different colored packages that are from different series. This one is from series 23 and is the one I’ve seen the most recently in stores near us. The price seems to be $4.99 every place I’ve seen them for sale.

These little packages contain 1 minifigure and half the fun is the suspense of wondering which minifigure will be inside your package! For this series, there are 12 different figures available and they all look like fun!

Ok, it’s time to open the package!! Drum rolllllllllll…..! Which one will we get?!

We got the Sugar Fairy! 🙂 Yay! These are the parts included in this bag.

The Sugar Fairy has a two-sided face so you get to decide which one you will see by how you put the figure together.

It was fun putting her together! 🙂 A base for her to stand on was included as well as an extra crown.

Here she is!

Now she can hang out with Butterfly Girl! 😉

No matter which figure is inside your package, it’s bound to bring some smiles and fun!
