Crayon Shavings Craft

Back on April 3, 2019 I suggested you to save your old crayons and crayon shavings for another project.

Well, today is the day we’re going to talk about using them! Coloring with crayons wears them down and you need to sharpen them to make those lines go where you want them to, right? Just like you sharpen a pencil. So that’s what I’m talking about when I say crayon shavings. When I was little, my mom saved our crayon shavings until we had enough for this project. It was something that didn’t happen often so it was especially exciting when it did! A note on saving crayon shavings…you can save each color into a separate container or put all the colors together in one. It depends on how you’d like to use them. My mom saved them all mixed together but I bought a small box of crayons and a pencil sharpener just for this project demonstration and so I saved each color separately. Here’s what you’ll need: crayons or crayon shavings, wax paper and an iron and ironing board…construction paper is optional. If you have crayons or pieces of crayons, you will need a pencil/crayon sharpener too.

If your crayons are already made into shavings, you’re ready to start! If you have crayons, the first thing you’ll need to do is use the pencil/crayon sharpener to make them into shavings. Remove the paper wrapper first. You’ll need something to hold the shavings. Very small containers with lids would be best, but I didn’t have any of those on hand so I put my shavings into Ziploc sandwich bags with the zipper seal. Static electricity is a bit of a problem when using those, but its really not a big deal. Tear off a medium sized piece of wax paper and lay it on the ironing board. If all the colors of the shavings are mixed together, let your child pinch some between their fingers and sprinkle them around on the piece of wax paper. A little bit goes a long ways!

Once their design is complete, tear off another piece of wax paper approximately the same size as the first one. Carefully lay it over top of the first one, being careful not to move the shavings and mess up the design. 😉 So just to clarify, the crayon shavings are BETWEEN the two pieces of wax paper. Turn your iron on to a very low setting, with NO steam. PLEASE only parents or older children do this part so no one gets burnt!! Carefully and quickly press the iron onto the top piece of wax paper and lift it off quickly. The crayon shavings will melt and make a beautiful design!

You can leave it as is, or cut it into a square or circle or whatever shape you want. I used a dinner plate and laid it on top, upside down, and traced around the edge and then cut it out.

If you have a hole punch, you can punch a hole in the top edge of the wax paper and use a piece of yarn or string to hang it up. (My hole punch seems to have gone AWOL.)

If your crayon shavings are separated by color, you can do more elaborate designs. Older kids might enjoy this more. Here’s my attempt at a flower. (I think I might have used too many shavings.)

Another way to keep these and to hang them up is to cut 1 inch strips of construction paper.

Cut your picture down to the size desired.

Using double sided tape (sticky on both sides) add paper strips around the edges to make a frame. Again, putting a hole in the top side and adding a piece of string will make it easy to hang up. I didn’t try using glue but I doubt it will work very well with the wax paper.

Something that makes these creations look extra special is hanging them where the sun can shine through, like on a sunny window. They look like they are stained-glass! 🙂

I’ll share one more picture that I made…just couldn’t resist! (Though now I promise to save the rest of my crayon shavings for the next little people that come to visit us!)

Yep, a rainbow! There’s all the shavings lined up…aaaaaand PRESTO!

This time I added a frame in a little different order. Before cutting the wax paper down to size, I added the construction paper strips to frame the rainbow.

And then I trimmed away the excess wax paper.

Once the pictures are complete, be sure to hang them in a sunny window where everyone can enjoy their crayon shavings masterpieces! 😉

Spring is for Planting Seeds!

It’s finally Spring! Once the sunny, warmer days begin to show up, our thoughts go to watching for new things to start growing outside…the spring flowers pop through the ground and bloom, our grass turns green and dandelions pop up everywhere! Yes! I love getting back to growing plants and planting flowers and veggies! It’s the perfect opportunity to teach kids about planting seeds and watching the little shoots peek through the soil and gradually grow into a big plant with flowers or yummy things to eat! There are lots of ways to grow plants and today I’ll share just a couple ideas with you. You can get started with just a few items.

The first way I’ll show you is super simple! All you need is a packet of seeds and some seed starting pellets, found in any store that sells home and garden items.

I found this style at a Rural King store and it really doesn’t get any easier than this. It’s as simple as it shows on the box…put the pellets in warm water, let them soak a few minutes, add the seeds and set them in a sunny spot. 🙂 If you think you don’t have a green thumb, you really should try these and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Here’s the flower seeds we’re using for our examples.

So, let’s get started! Lay some old newspapers on your table or counter top to make cleanup easy for any bits of dirt, seed or water that may escape. 😉 Grab your seed starting pellets and put them in a container that will hold water. Add some warm water and watch them swell up in just a few minutes. It’s pretty cool to watch!

Ready for seeds

After the pellets have swollen up to around 1 1/2″ – 2″ and they feel soft inside, drop 2 seeds on the top and gently cover them with just a little bit of the dirt inside. Some seeds are super tiny so be careful not to add too many seeds to one pellet.

Notice I used 2 different types of flower seeds. The ones on the left are Bachelor Buttons and the ones on the right are Zinnias.

These are ready to be set in a sunny place! It depends on the type of seed you plant how long it will be before they begin to grow or germinate. The Bachelor Buttons take 10-14 days and the Zinnias take 6-10 days. You can find this information on the back of the seed packet along with other information like how far apart to plant them after they grow, whether they are an annual or perennial, how tall they will grow, etc. It will be a good lesson in patience while you check each day to see if they have appeared yet. 😉 Keep the dirt moist but don’t make them soggy!

Now onto the second way of starting some seeds! Did you notice the egg carton with egg shells in it and the potting soil in the first picture? Yep, that’s what we’re using for this example. Save up some halves of egg shells until you have enough for the number of plants you want to start. I scooped some potting soil into a small bowl and because it was really dry, I added a little bit of water to it. After stirring the water and soil together, I spooned some into each egg shell half.

This time I used the Viola seeds because they are one of my favorite flowers! They look like miniature pansies and their colors are just so pretty! Again, add just 2 seeds to each egg shell half, cover with a bit of the potting soil and pack down ever so lightly.

The Viola seeds are very tiny! See the 2 light brown seeds in the center? That’s them! 🙂 They’re all ready to set in a warm sunny window. Keep the dirt moist but don’t add too much water at a time since any extra water can’t drain away. When the plants are big enough to be planted into a larger container, just crack the shell some so the roots have room to keep growing.

Now, just in case you aren’t really into growing flowers or your kids would like to grow something they can eat, here is one more example of something fun to grow. I used the same seed starting pellets as before but this time I added Cherry Tomato seeds.

Cherry Tomatoes grow well in containers, so you can grow these even if you live in the city and don’t have room for a garden. They like lots of sun and would do great on a patio. This type takes 7-10 days to germinate and around 65 days until you and the kids will have 1″ little red tomatoes to eat that you grew yourselves! 🙂 And that makes them taste even yummier! 🙂 Have fun while you introduce your kids to the joy of growing things!

Quick & Easy Cobbler

Hello again! Sorry to be gone for a while. Things got a bit crazy here and the in-laws needed some extra help, but I hope I’m back in the saddle again! Today I want to share a great recipe for cobbler that is so quick and simple to make that your kids can enjoy making it. It’s great for dessert or adding to breakfast or just for a snack. It only needs 5 ingredients that most of us usually have on hand plus some fruit. Here’s the utensils you will need:

Quick and Easy Cobbler

1 Cup Flour

1 Cup Sugar

2 teaspoons Baking Powder

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1 Cup Milk (or water works too)

2 Cups Fruit (Frozen blueberries are our favorite!)

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease or spray with non-stick baking spray a 9′ x 9″ baking dish. Combine the dry ingredients into a medium sized bowl.

Add the milk and stir to combine.

Pour batter into the prepared pan.

Spread the fruit evenly across the top of the batter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes until the top of the cobbler is browned.

We like it best served warm with a little bit of milk or ice cream! Yum! So quick and easy to make on short notice! Enjoy!

Bird Nester

Sorry to go MIA on you all…a dear friend of ours passed away this week and it’s been hard to have something upbeat to post. His funeral was today…so sad that he is gone but so thankful he was a part of our life since childhood. I did a little “gardening therapy” after we got home this evening. There’s just something about getting your hands in the dirt. This little “bird nester” was given to me as a gift and I am looking forward to see what birds show up to nab a bit of alpaca fiber to make their nests nice and cozy. 😊 The trees close to the house have died so I’m hoping this spot will interest the birds. I also sprinkled some dried meal worms around it to entice them. I may be doing this all wrong but we shall see if we get any takers. It’s been a soothing project for a sad day. Hugs to all of you!

Paper Chains

Have you made paper chains before? I’ve made so many that I lost count a long time ago! I made TONS of them as a kid AND as an adult. My kids loved making them and, of course, I’ve made them with the grand kids. But they are so versatile they could be used not just for “kid fun” but for birthday parties, baby showers, family reunions, bridal showers, summer barbecues, school’s-out-for-the-summer celebrations or just to decorate a kid’s bedroom. It has to be one of the easiest crafts ever thought of!

All you need is strips of paper and some type of adhesive.

I make my paper strips 1″ wide and 6″ long. I used my cutting mat, Omnigrid ruler and a rotary cutter (used only for paper, not my quilting one!). You can use a ruler and scissors too. You can use pretty much any paper you like from plain white printer paper to construction paper to scrapbook paper to…you get the idea. Just so it’s thin enough to bend into a circle. Start by making LOTS of paper strips. Apply glue (or I prefer to use double sided tape) to one end of your paper strip on the printed side, if your paper is printed.

Form a circle or loop by sticking the other end of the paper strip to the glue/tape.

Take another paper strip and slide it inside the first loop…then apply the glue/tape and make another circle.

That’s all there is to it! Just keep adding paper strips as links in your paper chain. 🙂 You can make your chain as long or as short as you like.

These can be easily hung just about anywhere – in a doorway, on the fireplace mantle, on the edge of a table, etc. They can even become a very big necklace! LOL

I mailed a set of paper strips to the grand kids for Valentine’s Day…

Easter is coming up soon…

Or somebody special might be having a birthday!

What little girl (and some big ones!) doesn’t love unicorns?

Your imagination is the limit! 🙂 For those of you that would like to try this but feel like you don’t have enough time for cutting all those strips of paper, I’ve made up a few kits of paper strips that I will be posting on my Facebook page that you can purchase from me.
