Coloring fun for everyone!

When I was little, one of my most prized possessions was a big box of crayons. I remember how I longed for a BIG box with all those extra special colors! I loved my little boxes of crayons, but the BIG box was just sooo amazing! All those wonderful sounding colors to use…salmon, outrageous orange, wild strawberry. I was sure my picture would be awesome if I was using red violet or periwinkle.

And it came with a CRAYON SHARPENER on the back of the box!!

(Save your old crayons and any crayon shavings for another special project! But that’s for another day! Stay tuned!)

In some ways, I think coloring is not as popular as it once was but in other ways it seems more popular than ever! We spend a lot of time on “screen time” these days, but even many adults have gone back to coloring as a way of relaxing. Coloring is so good for us! One reason is that its time AWAY from the screen which we all need! Motor skills can be improved for children through coloring and it also can slow the loss of motor skills in adults. It’s a creative outlet, helps us to relax, is inexpensive and provides us with good self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment. Not bad for a box of crayons and a coloring book, eh?

There are SO many types of coloring books, for both children and adults! Just walk into any book store and you’ll be amazed at what you see! Books of every size and almost any theme you can imagine are available. I really enjoy the color by number books myself. Some for kids…

And some for adults.

Here’s one I’m currently working on. I like that I can’t tell what the picture is before I start on it. πŸ™‚

You can color on mugs, bags, books, clothing…the list goes on! I even found a book of postcards to color and mail to that special someone you’re thinking of.

And, as I’m sure you know, there are many, many products you can color WITH such as crayons, markers, gel pens, colored pencils, twistables, etc.

Coloring is still great for kids AND for adults so if you haven’t colored anything lately, give it a whirl! You’ll be glad you did! πŸ™‚

Monday Giveaway!

Happy Monday to you! And Happy April Fool’s Day! Did anyone trick you already? When our kids were little, my husband started an April Fool’s joke with them that he has played on them every year since. Yep, he stills plays it on them, but now he just sends a text message. πŸ˜‰ It involves a purple horse in the front yard or running down the road in front of the house. I still remember the shocked look on their faces as they ran to the window to see this amazing horse! (I’m pretty sure they were planning to ask if we could catch him and keep him!) Today he changed it up a bit…today’s joke involved a black bear in the back yard and feeding it dog treats. Somehow they all caught on to the joke with our daughter even asking if it was purple. LOL Today begins our week of giveaways – one giveaway of a fun item for kids each day! To be entered in the drawing, just respond to my daily question. Today’s question is: Do you play April Fool’s jokes on others on April 1st or is that not really your thing? Today’s prize is a package of 5 colors of water beads! To read more about them, go to my blog post of Ooey Gooey Fun! https://thekidsniche.com/2019/02/21/ooey-gooey-fun/

The Kitten Who Thought He Was a Mouse

When I was little, I loved kitties! And I loved the story book version of cute, adorable, sweet little mice. (I have since changed my mind about the mice…well, I still like story book ones, just not the real critters who sneak into our home uninvited!) So when I found a book that involved both of these wonderful things, I was a smitten kitten. This book became one of my most treasured stories.

Not long ago, I found this book in a store and was thrilled to see it’s still in print!

One summer day the Miggs family of mice, find a small gray and black bundle of fur in their nest. They decide to adopt the tiny baby kitten into their family and they name him Mickey.

Mickey begins to grow and becomes a happy “mouse”, not realizing that he is indeed a kitten. He learns about the mice way of life and to be afraid of cats.

As Mickey Miggs grows he becomes better and better at being a mouse and can sniff out good food scraps to share with his brother and sisters.

But as you might guess, Mickey begins to find out that he is a bit different from his family but he also learns that maybe that isn’t such a bad thing. 😊 I won’t give away the ending but your kids might enjoy sharing this sweet story with you. 🐭🐱
